Transforming a 200m² Space into a High-Performance Gym
Smaller gyms often face a big challenge: limited space but high expectations. This case study shows how a 200m² area was transformed into a fully functional gym, balancing cardio, strength training, and recovery zones while ensuring a seamless flow for members.
The Challenge
The client had a compact space with big goals — they wanted:
- A full cardio zone
- Dedicated strength training equipment
- A functional training area
- A stretching/recovery corner
All within 200m², without making the space feel cramped or cluttered.
The Design Approach
We applied three key design strategies:
- Smart Zoning
- Cardio equipment (treadmills, bikes, rowers) placed along one wall with adequate spacing.
- Strength equipment and free weights grouped together to avoid interference with cardio users.
- A dedicated 40m² section for functional training, designed with open space and multipurpose gear.
- Optimised Equipment Selection
- Chose compact, multi-functional strength machines that provide multiple exercise options in less floor space.
- Prioritised essential cardio units over duplicates to save space.
- Member Experience First
- Mirrors strategically placed to create an illusion of depth.
- Bright, uniform lighting to keep the space open and energised.
- Acoustic flooring to reduce noise and protect equipment.
The Result
The redesigned space achieved:
- Improved flow — members can move between zones without congestion.
- Enhanced functionality — cardio, strength, and recovery all supported in a limited footprint.
- A premium feel — the space feels modern, welcoming, and professional.
Key Takeaway
Even smaller gyms can feel spacious and professional with thoughtful design. The secret lies in zoning, equipment choices, and putting member experience at the heart of the setup.
